When Rotary International President Ravi Ravindran spoke to New Generations during his visit. He shared the six lessons that he has learnt in his lifetime.
Lesson #1 No-one achieves anything alone!
It is very hard, almost impossible to find a self-made man. Many people in your life have made various sacrifices for you to be where you are. I have realised that by working together you will achieve anything. As a team member play for the name in front of your jersey and not the name at the back.
“I will never forget how my parents strove to send me to university or my friends who supported me or the banker who lent me money because I was a Rotarian.”
Lesson #2 Always keep moving forward
Do not waste a minute in life you have one life to live and you need to make the most of it. Do not take shortcuts in your planning. Don’t waste a second, don’t waste an hour it will never come back, invest that time as much as you can.
When I was a kid, his father used to ask him whether I had homework, and if he said no, his father used to say “Assign yourself one”. Even today he does not waste a single moment when he switches on his computer, he uses the time it takes to boot up to do something else.
Lesson #3 Money will not save your soul.
Money exists only to pay your bills look for higher goals. I found that joy, love is found in the same way for everyone, rich or poor.
“Nothing we have is enough, we will always need a little more. Money is the easiest thing to find, more difficult to find is ideas and good people to work with”.
Lesson #4 Don’t be afraid of disappointment.
You need to be willing to take risks, don’t do things for popularity. When you see someone alone go spend time with them, when you see someone being bullied help them, you won’t lose anything.
“What matters is the people close to you, people who want you to come up in life, listen to them and don’t worry about the rest.”
Lesson #5 Protect and cherish your family.
Do not lose touch with your family, they are your roots keep those roots strong.
“Every youth has a role to play in his life. As you start reaching for the skies you must remember that your roots are on the ground. if your roots are not fixed then the tree up there is going to fall. So keep those roots strong. Spend your time with the people precious to you and your precious time will become all the more precious”.
Lesson #6 Every human life is equally important.
“I worked with team of Doctors in Rwanda, as I am not a doctor I was helping where I could and I saw that deep down everyone is the same. We must treat everyone with kindness and respect showing affection to them. Wherever you are take the risk share the time you will not be poorer for doing so. We are here to make a difference and at the end of our lives we want to say the world is better because I passed through.”
This is your time to be a gift to the world
